Every year, thousands of pets escape the safety of their yards and human companions. Having a microchip is often the only way for these pets to be reunited with their owners. Implanting the chip is a quick and easy process that provides identification for your pet’s entire life!
All shelters and veterinary clinics have microchip readers that can help identify a lost pet.
The microchip is a tiny computer chip that has a unique identification number programmed into it. The chip is small enough to fit inside of a needle which is simply injected under the skin where it will stay for the life of your pet.
When it is time to spay or neuter your pet this is the ideal time for them to be microchipped due to your pet being under anesthesia. If your pet is already spayed or neutered, they can still be microchipped at a regular appointment with your veterinarian. Your pet may feel is a slight pinch, similar to the feeling of getting a vaccination.
Whether your pet is a roamer or a stay-at-homer, all pets eventually get an itch to discover new places. All it takes is for the mailman to leave open the gate, a rabbit to scurry by, or your little one to innocently offer your pet a bit of freedom. Having a microchip could be the only difference between being reunited with your pet and worrying about what could have happened.
Once a microchip is scanned, the unique identification number can be searched
in an online database. If the microchip is registered, the owner’s information becomes available to the facility that has scanned the chip in order to be reached.
Here at Westside Veterinary Clinic, we utilize HomeAgain, a microchip registration company. If you are ready to microchip your pet, just schedule an appointment with us! All you will have to do is fill out a HomeAgain registration form, and we will register your pet after implanting the microchip.
